Chris,
Bill H. at Great Plains told me that the only difference in the 421 and the 921 was the color of the dust cover. Some Altec customers were complaining about being able to see the silver dust cover through the speaker grills. Just sharing what I know.
I may be interested in the 817 cabs. Have you ever heard a 210? I have 3 of them that were L,C,R from a Theater. I bought them just to get the 515's out of them but can't bring myself to disassemble them yet because they sound too incredible. I was considering cutting up the 210's and using the material to build some 817's. I need something that I can use in a PA rig and the 210's are just not practical to be moving around.

The 921 handles way more power and is more efficient. The 421 was only rated 150 program, where the 921 was rated 200 pink noise. A LOT of difference. The early 421's wouldn't even handle that.
I suspect what Bill was telling you is the only difference in recone kits is the dust cap, there is much more difference in the original speakers.
The closest 421 to the 921 is the 421-8H-II, logically enough the last one.
Your neighbors called. They like your music.
